Not of the grand scale of churches in Europe, this little church gives more in its history than of its’ size. It is dedicated to Saint Barbara who is known as the patron saint of engineers and construction workers. The workers and engineers who built the Kariba dam wall built this extraordinary round church.
The church also honours the workers killed during the construction of the Kariba Dam, inside the church is a plaque with the names of those who lost their lives and a dedication in Latin is on the outside walls. The bell tower situated at the back of the church contains the original hand made bell that was constructed by the Italian dam wall builders. The open-air design (well suited to the climate) and beautiful stain glass windows add to the unusual little church’s charm.
